Stress can inhibit fertility for both men and women in various ways.
For men steroid hormones may be activated by stress, resulting in lower levels of sperm production and/or reduced sperm health and quality. Stress is thought to cause lower levels of testosterone in the sperm which affects the sperm health and sperm problems are the main cause of male infertility.
For women stress may result in the nervous system releasing stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol, usually associated with the fight or flight response in stressful situations. This can lead to a shutdown of the reproductive system or other hormones being affected, resulting in reduced egg quality and/or delayed egg release.
In addition stress, whether it’s due to everyday life or work, or the result of not conceiving, having fertility tests or fertility treatments can lead to behaviours such as smoking or drinking that are unhelpful for fertility.
The current Coronavirus pandemic is making life in general more stressful for many people. You might be feeling a loss of control over your life or uncertainty about the future.
You may have decided to pause attempts to get pregnant or temporarily stop fertility treatments. Or you may have had the decision over fertility treatments taken out of your hands during the current situation. Any of these could be adding further to your stress levels.
