April Fool's Day and Postnatal depression

How was April Fool's Day this year? Did anyone prank you or did you play a trick on someone?


If you are suffering from postnatal depression, practical jokes are probably the last thing on your mind. I am not saying we can't have fun or play a trick on someone, because some people may be experiencing postnatal depression; all I am saying is, generally I feel we should think carefully about other peoples' feelings and be kinder to each other. Making jokes about pregnancy and/or depression is simply not funny and could be deeply upsetting for someone who is in the middle of one or the other.


Having a baby can be the most wonderful thing in the world, but it doesn’t have to be. Giving birth to a baby can trigger lots of powerful emotions like excitement and euphoria, but also, in many cases, dread and anxiety. For some people, having a baby can result in something we may not expect: depression. It's a common problem, affecting more than 1 in every 10 women (but also fathers and partners), within a year of giving birth. Despite this, many women don't talk about their experiences. If we were to talk more openly about our experiences, I truly believe we would not only help ourselves, but also create a sort of community conveying the message that We are not alone. Countless studies show how we need to feel part of a community, something bigger, to keep mentally well.
