Complementary Therapies and Pregnancy

It’s important to look after your physical and mental, health and wellbeing during pregnancy, and studies have shown that complementary therapies, such as hypnotherapy, reflexology and massage, can be used alongside the care provided by standard medical care to treat a person’s mind or body, or both, and can have positive benefits during pregnancy.

Hypnotherapy uses a naturally occurring, altered state of consciousness, where the client is in a state of heightened inner focus and concentration, to help gain control over unwanted behaviours or to cope better with anxiety. During a hypnotherapy session the client will usually feel calm and relaxed and are more open to suggestions.

Hypnotherapy can be used to reprogram the subconscious mind through suggestions, and unwanted, unhelpful behaviours, such as smoking and drinking alcohol, can be changed or removed for healthy, positive improvements during pregnancy. And hypnotherapy has been found useful for preventing anxiety in pregnancy and relieving pain in labour and childbirth.

High levels of stress may result from the major life change of being pregnant - you could feel that you have lost control or don’t have enough resources to manage what you’ll be experiencing, and too much stress could lead to health problems for you and your baby. When you are feeling well, content and happy, you are better able to manage stress. When your stress is managed, it is not likely to have any serious effects on you or your baby.

Stressors, whether they are conscious or unconscious, can be treated with hypnotherapy, and self-hypnosis can be taught to help replace high levels of stress with deeper levels of physical relaxation.

Reflexology is based on the idea that different points on your feet, hands, face and ears are linked to other parts of your body through your nervous system, and during a typical session, a reflexologist will use their hands to apply gentle pressure to these points. In pregnancy, reflexology can help with relaxation, early morning sickness, constipation and migraines. Research shows that it boosts energy levels, relieves heartburn, reduces swelling and normalises hypertension. Reflexology can be recommended as a way to relieve tension, improve mood and help you to sleep.

Massage uses touch in a sensitive and respectful way, taking account of physical symptoms, wellbeing, and your lifestyle. There are lots of different types of massage therapy and massage during pregnancy can be an effective form of pain relief, and helpful for easing backache, headache, and constipation, as well as relieving anxiety and promoting wellbeing. Reduced stress is a benefit often gained through massage. Both physical and mental stress can physically occur within muscles causing a buildup of tension resulting in an increase in pain, and massage can help to increase relaxation, reduce pain and improve a person's overall mood.
