DRY JANUARY - ALCOHOL - AND PND

Having a baby can be the most wonderful thing in the world, but can also not be. Giving birth to a baby often triggers powerful emotions like excitement and euphoria, but also, in some cases, anxiety. For some people, having a baby can result in something we may not expect: depression. Most new mums experience "baby blues" after having a baby - mood swings, crying, anxiety and sleeping difficulties – but for some, that develops into Postnatal Depression, or PND. According to the NHS website, 1 in 10 women experience PND within a year of giving birth. It can also affect fathers and partners. Suffering with PND doesn’t mean we have a character flaw or that we are weak. Perhaps there was a comp

Dry January, Alcohol and Baby Loss

Your child dying is something you never ‘get over’; it stays with you forever. But, with the right help, you could learn to cope with everyday life and maybe even to think about your baby without the overwhelming and paralysing devastation that you may have experienced at some point - or all the time. It doesn't matter if it was last week or 40 years ago; we are all unique and experience loss differently; we all have different coping mechanisms. Some of us take to drinking alcohol as a coping mechanism. We all know that alcohol isn’t good for us, but how many know just how detrimental the effects of alcohol can be? It can also suddenly be difficult to know if we’re drinking because we’re dep

ALCOHOL IN PREGNANCY

There are plenty of reasons why many of us will give up alcohol for the first month of the New Year, and new decade. After the excesses of Christmas, Dry January can be a welcome challenge, whether we do it to save money, for charity or because we’re trying for a baby. We may even be pregnant already and looking to stop that occasional glass of wine that we haven’t managed to cut down. Studies in women trying to conceive, found that drinking 1-5 drinks per week lowered the number of those falling pregnant by 30%. Higher amounts of alcohol use lowered the number of pregnancies by 60%; so heavy drinking increases the time it takes to get pregnant but can affect a developing baby's health and r

Alcohol and fertility

Alcohol intake, whether it’s light, moderate or heavy, can negatively affect the sexual health of both men and women, leading to a loss of fertility and libido. Drinking alcohol can increase the time it takes to get pregnant, and if you are pregnant it can affect the developing baby’s health. The effects of drinking alcohol for a man can be: Lower levels of testosterone Impotence Lower sperm production Reduced sperm quality by altering size, shape and movement Liver disease from excess drinking can lead to fertility problems The effects of drinking alcohol for a woman can be: Lower chances of getting pregnant Interrupted menstrual cycle and ovulation Changes to ovarian function Reduced chanc

Postnatal depression and counselling

Having a baby can be the most wonderful thing in the world, but it doesn’t have to be. Giving birth to a baby can trigger lots of powerful emotions like excitement and euphoria, but also, in many cases, dread and anxiety. For some people, having a baby can result in something we may not expect: depression. Most new moms experience "baby blues" after having a baby and this usually includes mood swings, crying, anxiety and difficulty sleeping. Grief counselling and the benefits

Sadly, the death of a baby is not a rare tragedy: in 2018, 14 babies died before, during or just after birth every day in the UK. Related training for health professionals isn’t always adequate and parents whose hopes and happiness have just been shattered do need a sensitive explanation as to why their baby died, as well as ongoing support. Eva (not her real name) had a still-born baby and tells me that she still, seven years later, is “tortured by the if only questions” in her head. She still experiences the guilt she felt when her baby died, she feels bad about her body and hates looking at her tummy. She still struggles with seeing new-born babies. Days like Mother’s Day or the other chi

Reflexology for Fertility

Reflexologists take a holistic approach to each client, the aim is to treat the person as a whole, rather than focusing on a specific issue, and it is no different for a fertility client. There are multiple factors that can affect fertility and your reflexologist will work with you to help you get your body (and ideally also your partners body) in its optimal condition for conception and pregnancy. For a fertility client, a reflexologist would start with an extensive health and lifestyle questionnaire. This may be longer than a usual consultation as they would need a full picture of how you are physically and emotionally, but also where you are in the fertility process and details of any te
